Title: The Dragons Are Singing Tonight
Author: Jack Prelutsky
Illustrator: Peter Sis
Genre:Poetry, Fables, and Folktales
Publisher: HarperCollins
Copyright Date: 1993

Summary: This book is a combination of 17 poems about dragons. Dragons that are big, small, gentle, and ferocious. The poems encourage your imagination while using rhyme and rhythm, and wonderful words that will challenge the reader. The illustrations are absolutely amazing and hypnotize the reader with their beauty.

Educational Purpose: I would have students create their own poems with a certain kind of animal. For example dog, and the different types of dogs, and which one is their favorite dog. You could do this with cats, horses, birds, and fish.

Grade Level: (Fourth to Sixth Grade) This book challenges the reader with more complex vocabulary words. No Lexile Available.

  1. I want to read this poetry book, and I believe that children would too. Dragons are awesome. I believe just thinking about dragons and magical lands makes children start to imagine. If we can tap into this imagination, we can engage the students. I think between the pictures and the poems this would be a great teaching resource. Nice blog post.

  2. This sounds like it would be a great book to use for introducing a poetry unit! Using a creature like dragons would definitely capture the students' interest. I think it would be great if your class did their own collective poetry book where everyone writes their own poem about a particular animal and you bind them all into an actual book! The students would be so excited if they got to see their own work in something that looks like an actual book.

  3. This sounds like a fantastic book for the classroom. A lot of kids are really into dragons right now and this would draw a lot of kids in who might not think they like poetry. Thanks for sharing this book.
